Embracing Change
After relocating to the heart of Subi’s café strip, rebranding, and restyling, our passing trade has increased and I’ve met so many people that I would have never met before if I didn’t take this risk to find a new location during a global pandemic.
It could be my experience or the strength it takes being a woman in business, or the rush I get buying beautiful things from all over the globe that keeps me going, but whatever it is, Kul Kul is still sparking joy for me and I adore sharing that will my customers.
I love welcoming everyone personally, giving them time to take a moment out of their day to browse and enjoy discovering the constantly changing range of jewelry, gifts and fashion. I believe the most important part of the retail offering is personal service – which is one of the reasons Kul Kul is still a bricks-and-mortar store and a favourite of locals for the last 19 years.

What does Kúl Kúl Mean?
I am often asked where the name originated from.
When I bought the business, this was its original name from the previous owners Don and Rely Beard
I never contemplated for a minute changing the name I love it and still it symbolizes one of our deepest commitments to our customers.
Kúl Kúl, means the bells and gongs used in traditional ceremonies in Indonesia used to make people “feel welcome and ensure they will enjoy their visit.”

My fav brand in-store is Ayalabar, I love a splash of colour and Ayalabar is my go-to colour splash. I always find myself choosing clothes based on my earrings and I’m not even ashamed about it.
My favourite brand in-store is Smadar Jewellery. Everytime I’m thinking “what earrings should I wear today” I put on the Israeli ones. So classy and different.
My fav brand in-store is Najo, their designs are simple and always reliable. I wear Najo everyday.

When I bought Kul Kul 8 years ago I had a beautiful black and white border collie, Max who used to come into the shop every day and lay about waiting to say hello to whoever came in…
When he passed away I couldn’t imagine getting another dog, let alone a Border Collie. In 2019 we had been following on social media a group, Wish Animal Rescue,
Those who were travelling to South Australia to rescue Border Collies from a puppy farm, they returned, looking for foster parents. We decided it was time to get back to being fur baby parents and signed up.
SNOOP
Enter our boy Snoopy aka Snoop Dog! Rescue dogs come with their own set of issues and I won’t say it can’t be challenging, puppy farm dogs have rarely been loved, or exposed to any human/family life. Truth be told it’s heartbreaking when you really want to snuggle your pet and they are too scared to let you…… We finally got Snoopy’s trust by sitting on the floor in a corner behind a chair where he used to retreat to. Slowly he got used to the feeling of human touch and then we were Foster Fails and we adopted him officially. Now he is the most loving boy, loves to be with us the closer the better…. He is 3 years old now and in a fur baby family of two, he is the boss.
GUY
The amazing crew at Wish Animal Rescue called for Foster Parents again in January 2020. As they were travelling back to Adelaide for another mass rescue. We said yes straight away.
Knowing how important it was that these dogs had somewhere to go. The situation was terrible and the dogs they rescued were in rough condition. They loaded them into their custom vehicle and began the trip back to Perth, with 13 dogs they were stopped in their tracks for 5 days at a roadhouse when Fires prevented them from moving forward. By the time they arrived in Perth, these angles needed foster parents at the ready. Guy was a much more challenging boy with trauma, from a horrible life. He was just a young dog ready to do anything for self-preservation, and this time not only did we need to gain his trust we had to ensure Snoopy adapted to another dog in his home.
We failed at Fostering again, we are clearly not good to foster parents… Guy and Snoopy are totally inseparable. They are so loved and a big part of our life…
